On October 31, 1517, a Catholic monk nailed a paper on the door of a church in Wittenburg, Germany, challenging certain practices of the church of his day. This act of protest by Martin Luther touched off what has become known as the Protestant Reformation. 500 years later, the Catholic church is no longer the church that Luther protested. The Protestant churches, heirs of the Reformation, have helped to recover the heart of the gospel of grace, but also continue to fragment into thousands of different denominations and countless independent churches and is a sign of the on-going disunity and disagreement among Christ’s Body in the world. While significant differences remain matters for discussion and debate, it is important for the Body of Christ to come together and visibly show the unity that Jesus prayed (John 17) for and makes possible.
On Sunday, October 29th, Kalamazoo will host a unique event that will bring all Jesus followers together in a show of unity around the common gospel we share and a chance to seek greater understanding of Jesus followers in other traditions.
Come stand with our brothers and sisters as the unified church in this particular place and time.
